Cholla High to stage verbatim theatre piece, ‘The Arab-Israeli Cookbook

Promoting global awareness — as well as culinary coexistence — played a part in the choice of Cholla High Magnet School’s 2014 fall presentation of “The Arab-Israeli Cookbook” by Robin Soans, directed by Julian Martinez, the play is produced in partnership with the Qatar Foundation International.

Noor Jandali is an Arabic teacher from Tucson Arizona. She has been teaching Arabic for seven years. She teaches grades nine through twelve. She stated that, “The Qatar Foundation International, QFI, trains me and I take my training to my school”. Jandali is the only Arabic teacher in her school and her program is supported by a grant that she applied for. “All my students are Hispanic and I have an overload of interest in the Arabic Culture from the community”. In fact, a family moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Tucson to register their kid in the Arabic program, Jandali said proudly. If someone told me, a Palestinian-American native Arabic Speaker, twenty years ago that the Arabic language will be taught in public schools in the United States I would have not believed them. If someone told me that non-native speakers will be teaching Arabic I would have thought that is most certainly unlikely.
