Qatar Foundation International partners with Alexandra Cousteau and Blue Legacy on student cultural exchange in Doha

Posted on 2011-09-28

Photo by Bill ZelmanIn Doha on October 4th, Cousteau will speak to 40 students and teachers from the U.S. and Qatar to kick off their 11-day cultural exchange trip where they will explore the country and participate in educational activities around the theme of water conservation and preservation.

Cousteau and Blue Legacy’s expertise will support the students as they build leadership, academic and global citizenship skills by interacting with speakers, local and international experts, industry practitioners and each other.  Working together, the Qatari and American students will also develop solution-oriented projects and produce short films to capture and communicate this experience.

Blue Legacy’s CEO, Jonathan Smith, will be joining the trip to use his expertise to help the students develop and produce their film projects.  Serving as digital reflections on their time in Doha and as advocacy tools for “mainstream” audiences around the world, the short films will capture the people, places and systems affected by critical water issues.

“Water is a subject that is absolutely universal,” said Cousteau. “From the water we consume in our daily lives, to the rivers, lakes, and oceans that define the places we call home, ‘water’ is something we all share.  Through water, we can experience the unique beauty of local traditions as well as the common challenges of the everyday.  And, it’s a subject that demands a new perspective and an entirely new global conversation from this generation.  I am excited to join these bright young leaders in Doha to discuss water issues and explore ways that today’s challenges can drive the innovations and collaborations that will build a peaceful healthier and more prosperous world.”
