"Water is the primary medium through which climate change impacts the earth's ecosystem and people."
- World Water Assessment Programme
WASHINGTON, D.C.: This week, Qatar Foundation International (QFI) gathers students from Doha, Qatar and Chicago, Illinois on an environmental-themed exchange program that examines critical water issues affecting us all.
In October of 2011, students from Lindblom Math and Science Academy in Chicago participated in QFI’s Connecting Cultures, Exploring Science exchange trip to Doha, Qatar, in partnership with Blue Legacy. Together with their Qatari peers, the students explored water stories ranging from desalinization plants and water research laboratories to local islands, coastal areas and mangrove lagoons. They heard from Alexandra Cousteau and joined Blue Legacy to examine the scientific, engineering and ecological aspects of local critical water issues in addition to working with traditional artists and exploring cultural heritage sites. Throughout the entire experience, these young leaders collaborated on short multimedia shows to chronicle their experiences.
In the months since this initial exchange, the students have used QFI’s online YALLAH social media forum and WeVideo cloud-based, online editing software to work collaboratively on more comprehensive films about water in their communities and how water connects cultures. From March 18-25, 2012, QFI will gather several of the students from both Doha and Chicago to talk about their experiences and present their films in Washington, DC and New York City. Representatives from QFI, Blue Legacy and WeVideo will join the students to discuss this and other projects focused on connecting students through the exploration of water issues.
Highlights of the exchange trip include an event in partnership with the DC Environmental Film Festival, which will showcase the students’ videos during the Festival with a Q&A session led by Alexandra Cousteau. While in DC, the students will also participate in water service projects and spend an interactive museum day with the Smithsonian Institute. The students will then travel with Cousteau and Blue Legacy to New York City for events surrounding World Water Day and be featured on a panel with Cousteau at New York University. Upon their return to DC, the students will receive a “behind the scenes” tour of the National Geographic Society and attend the World Premiere of Robert Redford’s River Red.
