Qatar Foundation International Announces QFI Arabic Language Curriculum Grantees

Qatar Foundation International (QFI) has announced the awardees of QFI’s Curriculum Grants, including Harvard College, public schools in Los Angeles, CA and Tucson, AZ and the National Middle East Language Resource Center (please see a full list of grantees and their projects below). QFI’s Curriculum Grants are awarded to schools and language organizations to develop comprehensive and innovative curricula and teaching materials to be used in any Arabic language classroom.
Arabic language education in the US is hampered by a small range of available and appropriate curricula, especially at the K-12 level. These grants seek to broaden the range of available materials that incorporate the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards and the latest foreign language teaching techniques, including the use of technology and social media. All of the material developed from QFI Curriculum Grants will be openly available online to all Arabic teachers for no cost.
QFI Arabic Language Curriculum Grantees:
President and Fellows of Harvard College - Cambridge, MA
QFI is supporting the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University’s proposal to meet the growing need for articulated Arab and Middle Eastern culture teaching materials in the secondary school classroom through the development, testing, and dissemination of ten cultural modules. These cultural modules will be used to supplement existing Arabic language curriculum as well as other classrooms teaching Arab culture.
National Middle East Language Resource Center (NMELRC) – Provo, UT
QFI has offered a grant to NMELRC to host workshops to develop and refine a 1st year Arabic curriculum for middle and high school classes based upon ACTFL standards. These workshops will compile and expand upon NMELRC’s shared experience and knowledge over the last 5 years in the field of Arabic language education.
Al Bustan Seeds of Culture – Philadelphia, PA
QFI is supporting Al Bustan in the development of online resources for Arabic language, arts and culture with interactive learning and performance to further elementary/secondary educators’ and students’ understanding and appreciation of the Arabic language, arts, culture, and history. These tools provide engaging content that is standards-aligned with interactive capabilities to be used in the classroom and at home. Current projects include an interactive curriculum unit for teaching about the life and times of Umm Kalthoum, as well as a unit on the songs of Al-Andalus and the music of Ziryab.
Bureau of Islamic and Arabic Education (BIAE) – Los Angeles, CA
QFI is supporting BIAE in developing an Arabic curriculum project for developing teaching materials for beginner and intermediate Arabic language learners. It will target all the proficiency skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing with the goal of exposing students to the Arabic language & culture in a manner that enhances their learning experience & helps them achieve a higher level of mastery. It will provide activities & lesson plans that will emphasize language as it is used in various real-life situations that students are likely to encounter.
Bell High School, Los Angeles Unified Public School District - Los Angeles, CA
With QFI support, Bell High School will create an online Arabic curriculum for beginner and intermediate Arabic language students. The Arabic curriculum will be used mainly to build two online Arabic courses (modules) using Moodle (open-source PHP web application for producing modular internet-based courses that support a modern social constructionist pedagogy), and will be available as an open education resource available to all classrooms.
Safford K-8, Tucson Unified School District - Tucson, AZ
The purpose of this project is for the Arabic teachers with the help of an International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator to develop, teach, and evaluate four IB Arabic units. The teachers need to complete three International Baccalaureate training sessions by December 2012. Any teacher hired at Safford K-8 will teach this curriculum. The curriculum to be designed will benefit students from K-8. Since the IB/MYP program is also interdisciplinary in nature, other students who are not taking Arabic will benefit too. The grant will include registration fees for training, travel expenses, teacher expenses for writing, teaching, and evaluating the curriculum, and the purchase of software and books to support the delivery of the curriculum.
