Qatar Foundation International Partners with Intel and Khan Academy for Arabic Translation of Math and Science Modules
Posted on 2012-05-17
Qatar Foundation International (QFI) has partnered with Intel to translate in to Arabic core math and science video modules from the acclaimed Khan Academy and pre-load the materials on Intel desktops and laptops. This will provide free high-quality math and science content to teachers, students, and self-learners in Arabic-speaking countries and foster the growth of an open participatory community that unites diverse groups of learners across the globe.
QFI’s support, with co-funding from Intel, will underwrite the translation and “localization” of roughly 1,000 core math and science video tutoring modules for the first time in Arabic. The modules will be “localized” with installation onto Intel-based laptop computers and include a Community Feature button on the computers. These laptop computers will be distributed to Arabic-speaking countries, including Qatar, through the Intel Global Education program.
“Khan Academy is excited to further our mission of ‘providing a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere’ by translating and localizing the videos.” says Shantanu Sinha, Khan Academy’s President & COO. Khan Academy has received widespread media coverage and over five million students per month use the resources worldwide.
The Intel Offline Learning Platform (the “Player”) allows 600 videos to be bundled locally and played when a broadband Internet connection is not readily available. By pre-loading the content on these machines, students and teachers in areas with unaffordable, intermittent or no internet connection will be able to access science and math videos as well an offline version of the Khan Academy knowledge map.
The Community Feature on Intel’s Player will allow teachers, students, formal and informal learners, to have access to a broader group of learners. The feature will also connect users to QFI’s online multilingual learning spaces, offering access to a global community of learners and opening up access to additional standards-aligned Open Education Resources and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) content.
“Our partnership with Intel and Khan Academy, continues QFI’s commitment to provide truly open education resources,” said Maggie Mitchell Salem, QFI’s Executive Director. “With the translated and subtitled modules disseminated in both offline and online contexts for free under the Creative Commons license, we will provide access to world-renowned, free-of-charge, quality education materials to learners across the globe.”
