08aprAll Day10Fachverband Arabisch ConferenceTeaching Linguistic Diversity: Diglossia in the Arabic Classroom

Event Details

Not all Arabic is the same: High Arabic, Modern High Arabic, Classical Arabic, fuṣḥā, ʿāmmiyya, dāriǧa – the range of Arabic language varieties is wide and often this kaleidoscope of dialects and registers is even compared with entire language groups such as Romanic. In addition, there is a phenomenon that characterizes all Arabic-speaking regions: The so-called diglossia, i.e. the parallel use of two structurally different language codes depending on the social context. The question of which variety(ies) should be taught in language courses at universities, colleges or schools in German-speaking countries is answered very differently by those responsible for education, depending on the content of the objective. During the conference, sessions will reflect on this topic from the perspective of academics as well as language teaching practitioners.
