Speak Arabic: Susie Gains Unique Opportunities through Learning Arabic

May 1, 2025

"Arabic Honor Society and QFI have, and still do, give me and so many other students countless opportunities to continue Arabic studies and overall be a better, more knowledgeable, and more enriched human being." - Susie

From Curiosity to Commitment: The Start of Susie’s Arabic Journey
Susie’s introduction to Arabic began in high school when she was offered the choice between studying Arabic or Chinese. She chose Arabic, thinking the alphabet would be easier to learn and intending to complete the course simply to fulfill a language requirement. However, what began as a practical decision quickly evolved into a deep and lasting interest. She found herself drawn to the language, her teachers, and the curriculum. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom when she joined her school’s Arabic Honor Society (AHS), where she expanded her understanding of the Arabic language and developed a deeper appreciation for the various traditions and practices within Arabic-speaking communities.

Expanding Horizons Through Language
As her proficiency and passion grew, so did the opportunities available to her. In her senior year, Susie traveled with classmates to Utah to participate in an Arabic-language debate. This experience gave her the opportunity to apply her language skills in a real-world setting, building confidence and deepening her appreciation for the power of language in communication. Although her team did not win, they reached the final round, which was a significant achievement. In 2023, Susie was invited to participate in a TEDinArabic panel in Qatar, an event that allowed her to engage with innovators and share ideas in Arabic. This was a pivotal moment in her journey, as it demonstrated how learning Arabic could open doors to global platforms and meaningful exchanges.

The Decision to Continue at the University Level
Reflecting on her high school experiences, including her growth in the AHS and unique opportunities like the Utah debate and TEDinArabic panel, Susie knew she wanted to continue studying Arabic beyond high school. Determined to deepen her knowledge, she decided to pursue Arabic at the university level. This was a turning point in her academic journey, transforming her high school interest into a long-term commitment to language learning.

She applied for QFI’s AHS Incoming Freshman Award and was selected as a recipient. This award gave Susie the opportunity to pursue her passion for Arabic in college—something that might not have been possible without that support. It helped her turn a growing interest into a serious academic path by providing the resources and encouragement to keep going. She encourages other students passionate about Arabic to explore similar opportunities, which make it easier to follow their interests and build meaningful skills in Arabic.

This award, now called the First-Year University Award, has been redesigned to support a broader range of students beginning their Arabic studies at the college level. More information about the application process can be found here and we encourage interested students to consider applying next year.

A Continued Academic Journey
With the support of the award, Susie began her college experience eager to continue learning Arabic. She enrolled in an intermediate Arabic course during her first semester, ready to build on the foundation she had developed in high school. The course focused on strengthening grammar and vocabulary, with equal emphasis on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It also incorporated real-world topics and authentic language use, helping students apply the language in meaningful ways. Though rigorous, the course was deeply rewarding—challenging Susie to think critically, communicate fluently, and engage more fully with the language. Her studies were no longer just about learning Arabic; they were about using it to understand the world and her place in it.

Closing Thoughts
Susie’s story is just beginning, but the potential ahead of her is limitless. What started as a practical choice has now become a life-changing journey—one where the pursuit of Arabic is not just about learning a language but about opening doors to countless opportunities. Susie’s passion, determination, and commitment to her studies will undoubtedly guide her toward even greater accomplishments.

As she looks to the future, Susie is excited about the endless possibilities that come with her deep connection to Arabic. With a foundation in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, Susie is not just preparing for success in academia but also for a future that allows her to build bridges, communicate across cultures, and make a lasting impact in her chosen path.
