Speak Arabic: From High School Curiosity to Lifelong Opportunity

Sep 22, 2025

"I would urge anyone who has even the slightest bit of interest in Arabic to give it a shot. Arabic, like any other language, has its difficulties and complexities but with concentration and focus, progress can come more quickly than one might expect."

Pippa’s story vividly illustrates how mastering Arabic can unlock a world of unparalleled opportunities. Her decision to learn Arabic profoundly transformed her academic experience and continues to shape her future. It showcases how embracing this language can enrich education, open doors to incredible career paths, and deepen understanding of an interconnected world, providing a significant advantage.

The Spark: Igniting a Path to New Possibilities

Pippa's journey began in high school, chosen almost "on a whim." Moving from Western Massachusetts—a place she describes as not very diverse—to Chicago, she knew nothing about the Arab world. "I really don't think I'd ever met a native Arabic speaker... I really came in with no preconceptions at all." This fresh perspective allowed her to fall in love with the language's beauty without bias. She loved her teacher's enthusiasm for the culture and history, but she quickly craved more depth. In a large public-school class where many students weren’t there to seriously learn, she found herself wanting more rigor, intensity, and speed. This initial challenge highlighted the need for a program that could match her dedication and set the stage for QFI's pivotal support.

What started as an interest quickly blossomed into a passion. This wasn't just about memorizing vocabulary; it was about gaining a powerful tool for communication and a deeper engagement with a rich linguistic system. She immersed herself, practicing the language in various settings, engaging with Arabic media, and actively seeking out opportunities to deepen her linguistic understanding, laying the foundation for future success.

Beyond the Classroom: Accelerating Your Language Proficiency and Building Invaluable Confidence

Pippa's dedication led her to pursue intensive Arabic courses, even during her summers. Through programs like QFI's Summer Scholar Award, she was able to significantly enhance her language skills by taking a Northwestern University language class. This was the game-changing challenge she needed. This wasn't just an academic step; it was the first time she felt her Arabic "taking massive jumps." She recalls, "Just in a few weeks, I had improved tenfold, and it was the first time I really started to receive lots of validation for all my efforts." This experience was about building profound confidence in her linguistic abilities, a crucial asset for any future endeavor. As she approached her senior year, she knew her four years of high school Arabic and taking a university-caliber summer class had prepared her not just for challenging exams, but for continued language studies at the university level and beyond, positioning her for advanced opportunities.

"I can look back proudly knowing that my four years of high school Arabic prepared me well to handle this challenging course and will set me up to continue my studies next year in university, and beyond." This proactive approach to language learning and seeking out extra opportunities is a testament to how genuine interest can lead to transformative personal and professional growth.

University and Beyond: Deepening Language Proficiency and Accessing Crucial Support

For many, high school is just the beginning. Pippa's passion for Arabic continued into university, where she enrolled in advanced language courses. She even received crucial support through awards like QFI's First-Year University Award (formerly the AHS Incoming Freshman Award), which made her continued studies possible. This highlights a vital point for aspiring language students: invaluable resources and support systems are available to help pursue academic passions, especially in fields like Arabic that offer unique global linguistic perspectives and open doors to diverse career paths.

Being at a UK school meant having a more focused curriculum and area of study, a stark contrast to the more flexible courses available in the US. Pippa pursued a history degree, which meant she had no room in her calendar to take Arabic. With the backing of the Award, Pippa was able to leverage her Arabic language background and advocate for herself to include taking an Arabic class in her first-year schedule. She was so glad to be able to add the course, as it was a very intense, engaging class she took five days a week. She then made a conscious effort to ensure her studies revolved around Arabic language and the Islamic world for the rest of her time at University, even writing papers on great historical figures like Ibn Battuta and Ibn Khaldun.

The Beauty of the Script: A Personal Linguistic Achievement

Pippa vividly recalls the initial intimidation of the intricate Arabic script. Yet, her overwhelming desire to read it pushed her forward. Now, she can impress her non-Arabic speaking friends and family with her ability to speak the words she reads.

"Previously it seemed incomprehensible to me that one was able to distinguish letters and sounds from the intricate script. An overwhelming desire to be able to read the script also pushed me to study Arabic. Now I am able to impress my non-Arabic speaking friends and family with my ability to speak the words I read in Arabic script."

This personal triumph underscores the immense rewards of overcoming challenges in language acquisition. What seems daunting at first can become a source of profound pride and a highly marketable linguistic skill.

Embracing Challenges: Accelerating Language Growth in Every Lesson

Even with a strong foundation, university-level Arabic presented new challenges. Pippa found her beginner's course surprisingly rigorous and engaging, pushing her to learn new vocabulary, conjugations, and complex grammar rules at an accelerated pace. The emphasis on daily conversation, including dialect practice, was particularly impactful. This experience teaches that true language growth often comes from stepping outside comfort zones and embracing the intensity of new linguistic environments. The struggles she faced, like grappling with case endings or conversational fluency, ultimately led to a deeper, more profound grasp of the language, enhancing her overall linguistic competence.

"Not only did we discuss, respond, and repeat in Modern Standard Arabic daily, but one day a week was reserved for conversation in dialect with particular emphasis on Levantine Arabic. This constant practice was essential for preparing for our end of term Arabic Oral Exam. Although the conversation part of the course was more difficult for me than reading or writing due to my lack of experience in it, I appreciate the intense practice which the course required."

A World of Connection: Mastering Levantine Arabic for Practical Advantage

Pippa's appreciation for Levantine Arabic, a dialect spoken in a region she's deeply interested in, showcases the practical applications of language learning. Understanding dialects is key to genuine communication and effective linguistic application, providing a competitive edge in global interactions.

Pippa explained that Levantine Arabic is directly relevant to "the region of the Arabic-speaking world which I am currently most interested in and could possibly see myself living or working in at some point in the future."

This demonstrates how learning a language isn't just about grammar; it's about connecting with people through their native tongue, understanding their perspectives, and building bridges through linguistic proficiency, opening doors to new professional and personal avenues.

Continuous Exploration: Expanding Language Skills Beyond Academic Settings

Pippa's commitment to Arabic extended beyond formal classes. She spent a summer in a homestay in Rabat, Morocco, living in the Medina with a host family. She immersed herself in the Moroccan dialect, spending her free time having meals with them, playing with their granddaughter, celebrating Eid, and doing the grocery shop. This daily immersion was invaluable; even commenting on TV shows became a lesson, especially navigating the mix of her Fusha (Modern Standard Arabic) and their Darija (Moroccan Arabic). She left the program feeling more comfortable speaking the language and was proud of the relationships she maintained from her trip, from her host family to shopkeepers and taxi drivers.

This trip also inspired her to visit other Arabic-speaking countries in the region, traveling around Northern Africa to visit Tunisia and Egypt, as well as Andalusia in Spain. She emphasized how incredible it was to be able to have the opportunity to travel to and be “a tourist in these countries who could try and use my Arabic to engage with people, which is completely different. I never would have experienced these countries in the same way if I had just come in only with English. It was really cool to connect with people with my Arabic, although that being said, obviously the dialects make it difficult, and things get lost in translation. But even just the effort was always appreciated.”

This kind of experiential learning is invaluable for language acquisition and practical application, accelerating fluency and adaptability. It shows that language learning is a continuous journey, and the world can be a classroom for profound linguistic immersion.

Arabic: A Powerful Linguistic Asset in a Dynamic Career Landscape

Initially, Pippa envisioned a career in international politics and human rights. While her focus shifted towards art, museums, and history, Arabic remained a constant. She aims to bridge linguistic boundaries through the exchange of ideas and objects, creating a world where we learn from one another's linguistic expressions.

"Despite my career goal shifts, Arabic language and the culture of the Arab world remain a constant in my desired career trajectory. I am eager to bridge cultural and linguistic boundaries through the exchange of ideas and objects and to create a world where we learn from one another's cultures and creative products."

Since Pippa graduated from university this summer, she is still narrowing down her career path but wants to incorporate her Arabic language background. Her previous experience at museums and auction houses combined with her interest in books, manuscripts, and works of art from the Arabic world antiquities, has shaped her goal to pursue a career where Arabic is an asset. By doing so, she maintains a strong motivation to continue to practice and study the language to continue to grow professionally and linguistically.

This illustrates how language skills are incredibly transferable and valuable across diverse career paths, providing a unique linguistic edge and a truly global perspective that enhances employability and impact.
