With comparable data on Arabic language programs collected across six countries (Canada, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States), the initiative aims to provide a comprehensive view of Arabic language instruction and enrichment and its long-term impacts on students’ careers and lives. The final report is expected by August 2025.
The SALP Research Project will utilize mixed methods to deliver an in-depth analysis of Arabic language programs. This approach will involve a detailed examination of teaching methodologies, policy frameworks, program structures, and the demographic contexts in which these programs operate. The project seeks to uncover nuanced insights and interconnections within the landscape of Arabic education.
By synthesizing these insights, the SALP Research Project will provide QFI and its international partners with a valuable understanding of the current challenges and opportunities in Arabic language education. This knowledge will be instrumental in shaping strategic initiatives, improving program effectiveness, and fostering collaboration to enhance educational outcomes.
This collaboration with IIE is a stepping stone in QFI’s 10-year strategy to advance Arabic language education,” said Dr. Omran Al Kuwari, CEO of Qatar Foundation International. “The SALP Research Project is vital for ensuring the sustainability and growth of Arabic education. The insights gained will be essential for implementing evidence-informed practices and addressing the needs of Arabic learners and educators in the future.
“Partnering with QFI on this important study marks a significant milestone for us and the field of language studies,” said Jonah Kokodyniak, Executive Vice President of the Institute of International Education. “The SALP Research Project will provide valuable insights to help develop more effective and equitable Arabic language programs, ultimately improving educational outcomes globally.”
This initiative highlights the need for multilayered collaborations to advance Arabic language studies. It acknowledges that improving Arabic language education requires cooperation at multiple levels and among various partners and stakeholders to expand educational opportunities.
