Qatar Foundation International (QFI) is proud to announce the return of its LEARNS Ireland program for a third consecutive year, taking place from 13–14 June. This innovative initiative is designed to meet the urgent educational needs of Arabic-speaking newcomer students by providing targeted support in both Arabic literacy and English language acquisition.
The LEARNS program is a direct response to findings from the SALaM Ireland study, which revealed critical gaps in language support for refugee and migrant youth in Irish schools. By addressing these challenges head-on, QFI is helping to shape a more inclusive and effective educational landscape for multilingual learners.
Originally launched in 2023 at St. Oliver's National School, the program expanded in 2024 to include St. Nathy's National School, with both schools continuing their participation through summer 2025. LEARNS supports students who often arrive with limited formal education in Arabic and face the dual challenge of learning English while preserving their native language.
Through its dual-language approach, LEARNS not only enhances students’ academic success in English-speaking classrooms but also strengthens their cultural identity and cognitive development through Arabic literacy. The program equips schools with the tools and training to sustainably integrate Arabic into their curricula, creating long-term impact.
Research consistently shows that plurilingualism improves cognitive flexibility, reduces barriers to learning, and leads to better academic performance. LEARNS exemplifies how structured, evidence-based language support can drive meaningful change in education systems.
