The Arabic language has significantly impacted other languages around the world, including Romance languages. The Romance languages are a group of languages derived from Vulgar Latin that include French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan.
In the 8th through 13th centuries, trade in the Mediterranean, scientific translations from Arabic to Latin, and the Umayyad and Aghlabid dynasty conquests of the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily increased contact between Arabic and Romance languages. Today, Romance languages can trace hundreds of words and their roots to Arabic!
